Community music can mean different things to different people - to some it might mean what concerts/performances occur in the community, to others it might mean people in the community playing music, or even music soceities that exist in the community.
I would say that community music combines all of these aspects, and has developed much over the years (and continues to develop).
To provide an example, I will look at music in the community where I live, Goring-On-Thames - but first I will focus on how community music has developed over time in general.

Music In The Past
Music has probably always been around since the ancient civilisations, and there are some examples of musical systems from fairly early on - the oldest complete composition, the Seikilos epitaph, is estimated to have been made between 200 BC and 150 AD...
At this time the community music was essentially religious, and it remained this way even up to the 1500s, the time of renaissance.
However, people's idea of community music has changed quite a bit since then. Community music gradually became more of a pleasure, a thing to listen to when relaxing. For example, in the baroque & classical periods, it was often the fashion for the rich to go to the opera, or invite small chamber groups to their houses.
But Beethoven began to engineer another change in the way community music was viewed, after making it a more serious and less light-hearted affair. People began to pay attention to the music itself rather than using it as background noise.
Then in the 20th Century, people (off the back of all the music that was being performed) began to form their own groups, and now community music is for anyone who's merely interested in music, or is a professional musician themsleves.

Music In Goring
There are three main musical events/soceities/groups that are based in Goring: Goring Unplugged, Goring & Streatley Concert Band, and the Gap Gig.
I plan to include all of these three in my information pack.

Concert Band
- started as a brass band before the 1st world war
- after the 2nd world war it was reformed, but because there were not enough brass players they opened their doors to all wind players (and percussion)
- started performing at retirement homes and then moved up to playing in places like the Corn Exchange, and other small concert halls
- Money for charity, not profit
Three principles:
- fun, for people to enjoy
- accepting of all ages
- providing the opportunity for people to experience playing in a large ensemble
The addition of the 'Starter Band' was originally meant for people who weren't quite as technically proficient, or who wanted to learn a new instrument; however, it has now developed into it's own band, and is not as strict in terms of instruments as the main band (i.e. bass guitar, singing)

Gap Gig
- Formed in 1999 by Bill Jackson and John Calvert
- They realised that the logistics of visiting Ronnie's was a bit of a nightmare, so they decided to bring the musicians to Goring
- First to play - Art Themen Quintet
- About once every two months

Layout
The leaflet needs to be:
I don't want to have too much writing on the page, because that would put people off. At the same time, I don't want to have too little because that wouldn't be helpful enough.
Goring is quite posh, so I was thinking of having the front with a picture of the river, and the background colour of the leaflet will be brown - (white text).
Goring Unplugged Page
This will be brighter than the others because the actual society is lower budget, and very casual. It also needs to appeal to younger people, as this is a big focus of what Goring Unplugged try to help.
Concert Band Page
This will stick with the title page colour scheme (white text, nice picture), because it is a fairly posh group (being a fairly decent wind band).
Gap Gig Page
This will be bright, but maybe not as lurid as the Goring Unplugged Page - I'm thinking of having gold/yellow text, with some jazz clipart.
- Accessible
- Representative of Goring as a community
- reflection of each individual society/ensemble
